In 2004, Douro Azul operated in the tourism industry, running daily and weekly cruises in the Douro region, with a large boat fleet. The company also developed other sight-seeing business lines such as helicopter tours and train excursions and explored 2 hotels in the Douro region.
The investment by Inter-Risco, and three other Portuguese private equity investors, had as a goal to support the expansion strategy and the strengthening of the company’s position in the Douro river. During the investment period Inter-Risco had a key role in focusing the company in its core business and the management in the control of costs.
However, Douro Azul successively underperformed, which led the private equity syndicate to sale its stake to the founder in December, 2008.
